Two things I have learned... by Dr. Harvey Cohen
I have been teaching about
natural health for dogs for almost 30 years and it is very interesting to me
that I find myself saying virtually the same things now, as I did when I began.
It's not that I haven't learned new and wonderful things along the way about
how to keep our companions happier and healthier. It is simply that what
matters most has not changed at all. It is clear to me that there are really
just two things that are critically important to know on this subject and these
two things will enable us to help our dogs and ourselves achieve optimal
wellness; love and fresh, pure, unadulterated food.
Of
course there are other things that matter in the overall health of our
companions, but if a dog is loved and is fed a healthy diet - he or she will
have the best chance at maintaining good health.
Loving your dog is usually not a problem,
choosing a diet is what can be confusing and frustrating. We hear so many
different opinions about what is the best diet to feed them, yet large
commercial dog food companies are influencing us every day, so we try to
educate ourselves about what really is the best way to feed our dogs. The answer may not always be clear.
But
it really shouldn't be that confusing.
Here is what I know.
A dog should eat pure food. That means food without
chemicals, preservatives, artificial dyes and flavorings.
A dog's diet should not have any added salt or sugar
and should consist mostly of good sources of protein, meaning beef, fish, poultry
or eggs. These protein sources should be rotated to provide a variety of
amino acid concentrations.
Grains should make up about 6-10% of a dog's diet and
these grains should be easily digested grains, such as brown rice and
oats.
Dogs do well with vegetables added to their diet to
provide essential vitamins and minerals.
Dogs should have a variety of oils added to their
diets daily. These oils should also be rotated and can include flaxseed,
borage, salmon, sesame, or hemp oil.
I am convinced that if our canine
companions eat diets that are fresh and chemical free, that their vitality,
longevity and general health will be greatly enhanced. We, who want the best
for our dogs, must love them the way they love us; unconditionally. In conclusion,
if we feed them the best diet possible we will improve their lives enormously
and they
are counting on us to know this.

Who is Dr. Harvey?
Dr. Harvey
Cohen, known to most as Dr. Harvey, is a pioneer in holistic nutrition and the
natural feeding of companion animals. He has been a tireless advocate of
natural living for people and animals and has dedicated his life to teaching
others the healthiest way to care for their companions. Distressed by the
growing numbers of animals afflicted with cancer, allergies, skin problems,
kidney disease, digestive disorders and arthritis, Dr. Harvey
determined that the root of most of these problems is commercial pet
food. Dr. Harvey has always believed that animals will live longer,
healthier and happier lives if they are fed chemical free foods. Since that
time, Dr. Harvey has created foods, treats and supplements for dogs, cats,
birds and horses, that use only healthy, chemical-free, all natural and organic
ingredients. He has helped thousands of companion animals to regain their
health and thousands more to maintain optimal wellness.
Dr. Harvey
lectures extensively throughout the United States,
Japan, Canada and Europe,
on the health and nutrition of all creatures, great and small.
