What is a puppy mill?
According to The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), a puppy mill is abreeding
facility where puppies are churned out in large numbers, with little
regard for their health or wellbeing. The puppies are then sold through
pet stores, classified ads, and even over the Internet.
Mills also sell directly to consumers – often posing as "reputable breeders."They
are only looking to make a profit, and commonly disregard the physical
and emotional health of the dogs, resulting in puppies who can suffer
from severe physical and emotional ailments, or even die.
But the puppies aren't the only victims. The breeding dogs at puppy mills live their entire lives in cages, without ever seeing a treat or a toy, going for a walk, or becoming part of a family. Most puppy mills are legal, so the best way to stop them is for dog lovers to stop supporting them. To avoid supporting a puppy mill, The HSUS suggests never buying a puppy from a pet store, over the Internet, or from any facility you have not visited in person.
